Northgard is a strategy game based on Norse mythology. You’ll explore an open world with interesting tasks. You start by creating a small settlement and then focus on its development. Improve living conditions for your inhabitants, gather food, build new houses, and find access to water sources. You need to explore the vast world to secure necessary resources for yourself and those around you. Along the way, you’ll encounter plenty of enemies who will try to destroy your creations and take your life. Be prepared for brutal battles, as your settlement can be attacked by undead creatures at any moment, or a fire-breathing dragon might swoop in and wreak havoc. Mother Nature herself will also be a formidable opponent, constantly throwing new challenges your way, whether it’s freezing blizzards or unbearable heat. You must be ready to handle it all and find a way to provide shelter and warmth for your people.
This Scandinavian strategy delves deep into the ancient mythology of the Vikings, who discovered Northgard – a city full of wealth, myths, and ancient legends. The game blends peaceful graphics with gradual development of your settlement. However, the Vikings quickly cooled their enthusiasm when they encountered the first danger in Northgard – a ferocious cold that envelops the shores and heart of the island. The second danger comes from wild animals and limited resources on the territory. And the third – the undead, risen to defend their ancient kingdom.
The storyline is actually crafted for the Vikings themselves, with players being told the tale of Jarl Rigg. His father was killed by Jarl Hagen, who also stole the ancient relic, the Horn of the King. Setting off from his Viking kingdom, Rigg gathers a powerful fleet, but half of his troops perish on the way to the island. As it turns out, Jarl Hagen has made himself quite comfortable on this island, where everything is fully under his control: from skeletons to beasts. Due to his power, our hero must practically survive on the new island to avenge his father and reclaim the ancient family relic.
Upon arriving on the island, the player will have a limited amount of resources to manage. Among them are people who weren’t always warriors. Some can be turned into blacksmiths, some sent to gather food, and the remaining group can be transformed into fierce warriors ready to rip everything apart for Jarl and Odin.
Through strategic opportunities, the player can expand their borders, but be aware that warriors will need to defend them from constant raids. Your army won’t replenish quickly, and there will be plenty of threats throughout the game – especially deaths from cold will occur frequently.
Besides constant conquests, players will have the chance to upgrade their units in the skill tree. For instance, you can easily make resistance to cold the main ability, but then in battles against skeletons, the Vikings will fight fiercely, sometimes losing. Managing the settlement is straightforward. Building constructions is allowed after constructing a special municipality. The more resources, the more buildings, but remember that excessive construction may spoil the landscape.
